Sigma Chi was founded at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio on June 28, 1855. In 1967, Kappa Sigma Phi became the first social fraternity at Austin Peay, and was chartered into the Sigma Chi Fraternity as the Eta Xi Chapter on April 28, 1973. Today, Sigma Chi has 236 Active Chapters with 15,100 active members. There are also 149 Alumni Chapters that are in support of the 295,144 lifetime initiates into the fraternity.
Sigma Chi’s purpose is to promote the concepts of Friendship, Justice, and Learning; its mission statement is to develop values-based leaders committed to the betterment of character, campus and community. Sigma Chi’s vision statement is “to become the preeminent collegiate leadership development organization—aligned, focused and living our core values”. Although this vision of Sigma Chi was based upon the notion of shared ideals, we believe that true brotherhood would thrive best among men of different temperaments, talents and convictions. Our guiding principles, unchanged for over 150 years, continue to define the essence of Sigma Chi.
In our quest to be the preeminent collegiate leadership development organization, Sigma Chi goes further than any other fraternity in leadership development programming. Sigma Chi provides numerous programs and workshops on a local, regional, and international level. These programs, Tri-Province, Balfour Leadership Training Workshop (BLTW), and Horizons, are world class programs and are superior to any other in the Greek world and unavailable outside Sigma Chi.
We also encourage our members and others in our area to practice selfless service. Along with many hours of community service to Habitat for Humanity, Best of Clarksville, Relay for Life, and other local services, our Fraternity has a long tradition of supporting the Monroe Carell Jr.’s Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, and recently, we have also become in support of the Huntsman Cancer Institute. We raise money for these organizations through an award winning philanthropy week known as “Derby Days.” We are also in support of other organization’s philanthropy weeks, as well. The Sigma Chi Fraternity at Austin Peay is known as the biggest contributor for other organization’s philanthropies.
